Community Law Wellington & Hutt Valley is a registered charity, providing free legal information and advice to everyone who needs it. Our city offices are open at specific times of the day and night, and we also have outreach clinics in a number of suburbs throughout Wellington and the Hutt Valley. You don’t need a booking, but it pays to arrive early to put your name down as people are seen in the order they arrive. We will open our doors half an hour before a session starts, and you can come then, get your place in line, and make yourself a cup of tea!
Those with the least have the same or better access to justice as those with the most
Comprehensive solutions that empower individuals, whānau and the community as a whole
An inspiring work environment which enables meaningful, fulfilling work
Our services are completely free and confidential, and you are welcome to bring a support person. You can also ask to see someone who is right for you, for example a Māori lawyer or a woman lawyer.
We are a kid-friendly service, and you are more than welcome to bring your children with you. Both of our offices have a Rūma Whānau (family room) where we have books, toys, colouring, comfortable seating, and change tables. You might be able to meet with the lawyer in the whānau room, or leave bigger kids to play while you meet with the lawyer. Please let us know if there is anything you or your kids need to be more comfortable, we are happy to help!
Please note, we can’t help with some issues:
- We don’t give advice to landlords, employers, businesses or people in dispute with community groups
- We can’t prepare or witness wills, powers of attorney, or relationship property agreements
- We don’t give advice about land and property transactions or administration of estates
If we can’t advise you, we can still give you pamphlets of legal information, and point you in the direction of other services.
