Student Rights Service (formerly the Parents Legal Information Line) is a national, free phone service for parents and students wanting information and assistance on issues for children and young people at school. SRS offers parents, caregivers and students, information and assistance on a wide range of issues involving children, young people and the school system:

  • Rights to education
  • Enrolments/zoning
  • Fees
  • School rules/discipline
  • Uniforms
  • Truancy
  • Bullying
  • Students with disabilities
  • Criminal matters at school
  • Stand downs/Suspensions/Exclusions/Expulsions
  • Privacy
  • Making a complaint

Ring 0800 499 488 and leave a message on the answering machine. A volunteer will call you back to discuss problems at school and:

  • Give legal information about students’ and parents’ rights and obligations
  • Explore ways of resolving disputes
  • Assist by contacting the school on behalf of parents or students
  • Connect students and parents with their local advocacy services
  • Send out copies of Schools and the Right to Discipline
